Quantifoil with gold Islands on Carbon Film
In case of a coating with holey carbon and Gold a closed gold layer can only have a minimum thickness of 4 – 5 nm because of technical limitations.
This is for transmission in the TEM, depending on the application, already too thick.
Therefore, Gold Islands will be made of about 2 nm thick, so that on the one hand molecules can bind with the gold and on the other hand obeservation between the islands is possible.
